SHE Tirupati

Where it all began

The Society for Hunger Elimination (SHE) is a non-profit organisation founded in Tirupati on 16 October 2010 — World Food Day. SHE has been dedicated to feeding the most vulnerable sections of society, including malnourished children and abandoned elders.

Our founder, Dr. V. Rajagopal, was inspired by the teachings of Bharat Ratna Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, a renowned humanist and the Father of the Green Revolution. His guidance has shaped our mission to address hunger at its core by focusing on both food security and public awareness.

SHE was inaugurated by Dr. B. Vengamamba, Director and Vice Chancellor of S.V. Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati, presided over by Dr. A. Eswara Reddy, Former Speaker of the AP Legislative Assembly. It was formally registered in 2011 under the AP Registration of Societies Act as a non‑government, non‑profit organisation.

A new unit, the same mission

The idea for a Hyderabad unit was first raised on Independence Day, 15 August 2022, at a web meeting addressed by Dr. P. Ananda Kumar, Former Director, IIRR Hyderabad. The proposal to establish a unit mirroring SHE Tirupati was taken up, and SHE Hyderabad was formally registered as 351 of 2024 on 13 September 2024, under the founding leadership of Dr. JS Prasad (Former Head, Entomology Division) as President and Dr. S. R. Voleti (Former Director, IIRR) as Secretary.

The Hyderabad unit follows the same principles as HQ Tirupati, adapted to local conditions, and works on a strict no‑profit, no‑loss basis. Beyond Annadhanam, the unit has also distributed medicines, diapers, blankets, sweaters, school bags and clothing at old age homes and orphanages.

The Journey

How It All Started

In 2006, the Hunger Elimination and You Movement (HEYm) was launched with guidance from Padma Vibhushan Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, the father of India's Green Revolution.

Dr. Swaminathan encouraged a deeper understanding of global hunger dynamics. This led to a visit to IFPRI, Washington, and the study of the Global Hunger Index (GHI). Awareness programmes, publications and campaigns on food wastage were initiated in schools, colleges and public spaces.

This foundation led to the formation of SHE in 2010, dedicated to feeding the most vulnerable sections of society.

Our Vision

To light the lamp of hope and dignity in the lives of the hungry poor and ensure their right to food.

Our Mission

  • Care the uncared
  • Reach the unreached
  • Feed the unfed poor

Our Slogan

Dr. M. S. Swaminathan Birth Centenary Souvenir

To mark Dr. M. S. Swaminathan's birth centenary, SHE Hyderabad brought out a commemorative souvenir in collaboration with HQ Tirupati — released on his birthday simultaneously across every local ICAR institute in Hyderabad: the Indian Institute of Rice Research, the Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research, the Indian Institute of Millets Research, the Poultry Directorate, the Indian Institute of Meat Research, and ATARI Hyderabad.

The release also reached Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, and SHE members in neighbouring states extended it to Bangalore and Bhubaneswar — with a further release at the Plenary Session of a National Symposium held in New Delhi.
